Explore The Historic England Archives - Talk

Bessie Surtees House is currently hosting the exhibition ‘Picturing England’ which explores 150 years of English History through stunning archive images from the Historic England photographic archive. The images reveal the changing face of England from the 19th to the 21st centuries and show how crucial photography is for recording the history of places in the face of development, technological advances, bombing, natural disasters and neglect.

The Historic England Archive contains 9 million images documenting England’s buildings and landscapes and taken from the ground and air.

To link with this Historic England are holding an Illustrated talk entitled "Explore the Historic England Archives" by Historic England Head of Archives, Mike Evans. The talk is on Tuesday 19th April 7-9pm in Bessie Surtees House.

Mike Evans is also co-author of the book Picturing England and his talk will illustrate some of the fascinating treasures in the Historic England collection and find out how these photographs have changed the way we see and understand our environment.
